Libro 2

This chapter introduces and defines the subject matter of this book. The intention is, first, to identify for practical marketing purposes the nature of travel and tourism and the industry it supports and, second, to indicate the growth potential of the industry in the next decade and its role in post-industrial societies.

Although the niceties of definitions can be debated endlessly,
travel and tourism is best understood as a total market reflecting the demand of consumers for a very wide range of travel-related products. It is widely claimed that this total market is now serviced by the world’s largest industry. At the beginning of the new millennium increasing interest is being shown in many countries in the potential of global travel and tourism as an important contributor to economic development, measured in terms of investment, employment and balance of payments. There is also increasing interest in the potential environmental and cultural contribution of tourism to the social and cultural life of host communities and to the built and natural environment.
